
Metropolitan Electric Supply Company Ltd
Registered 26th November 1887 as the South Metropolitan Electric Supply Company Limited. Changed to this 28th July 1888. Obtained Parliamentary powers for the supply of elctricity to Holborn, The Strand, St.Giles, Bloomsbury, Marylebone, Paddington and a portion of St.Martin’s in the Fields. Acquired Whitehall Electric Supply Company Limited. Gradually extended operations to Acton, Southall and Hanwell. Directors included Sir John Pender, J. Denison Pender and Jabez Spencer Balfour. Nationalised in 1948. Company number 25395
Capital £500,000 in 49,990 ordinary shares of £10 and 100 Founders shares of £1. Increased in 1896 to £1,000,000 and in 1903 to £1,500,000. In 1905 the ordinary shares were subdivided into 2 shares of £5. In 1923 all £5 shares were subdivided into shares of £1. Increased to £2,000,000 in 1926. Increased in 1929 to £2,500,000 in 2,000,000 ordinary shares of £1 and 500,000 4½% Cumulative Preference shares of £1. Increased in 1931 to £3,000,000 and in December 1935 to £3,500,000 by the addition of £500,000 ordinary stock.
