Incorporated in Illinois in 1867. The well was drilled in 1864 at the corner of Chicago and Western Avenues, and became quite a local spectacle. The story goes that it was a clairvoyant who suggested the location for the “purest and healthiest water known anywhere”, and also suggested that oil would be found there but this sadly did not materialise.
