Provisionally registered in London on 14th May 1845 but only Incorporated in London by Act of Parliament in 1850, the planned route being from Calcutta following the course of the Ganges to Benares and Allahabad. The first part of the line was opened in 1854 and the final part around Benares was opened with great celebration in December 1862. Total including branch lines 601 miles.

On the 21st July 1856 the company was empowered to convert paid up shares into stock as well as issue shares at various rates of interest.
