Description
The “Uralit” company was created with the aim of developing deposits of very high quality asbestos in the lowland of the Katun River, near the city of Biysk (Altai Territory). In the second half of the 19th century. the Tsar gave the brothers Alexander and Vladimir Imshenetsky a concession for the development of asbestos deposits, in connection with which they established the company “South Altai Asbestos Partnership” for the extraction and processing of asbestos. The brothers built a small factory which, however, did not become successful. In St. Petersburg, they found the merchants Spennemann and Tizenhausen, with whom they agreed to establish an enterprise. So, in 1898 JSC “Uralit” was established in St. Petersburg, the purpose of which was the production of heat-resistant building material called “Uralit” and its marketing. The asbestos processing plant was equipped with a stone crusher, a drying kiln and a drum classifier to separate asbestos from the rock. Due to the lack of energy, all equipment was horse-drawn. Thus, the South Altai Asbestos Association mined and processed asbestos, while AO “Uralit” in St. Petersburg was engaged in the marketing of products under the name “Uralit”. Asbestos is still called uralite in Russia today. “Uralit” became so successful that it was decided to build a factory for processing asbestos into various heat-resistant and refractory products in St. Petersburg to obtain even greater profits.
