Founded during WWI (1916) on the initiative of the branch of the Swedish company A. Johnson & Co. in Petrograd. The intention was to produce machine guns according to the system of the Swedish officer Wilhelm Hermann Olaf Madsen. The weapons factory was set up in the city of Kovrov, Vladimir Governorate. After initial problems caused by the war and the start of the revolution, production only started after 1918, after the foreign founders were excluded from the company and the Russian military appointed its own officer and weapons master Vasily G. Degtjarev as production manager. The arms company still exists today and is now called “Degtjarev”. (Source: Boone Shares May 2025)
