Furness Railway Company
Incorporated on 23rd May 1844.
A 14 mile line to carry mineral traffic between Barrow and Piel pier and the mines and quarries in the area. It opened in 1846, and passenger traffic commenced later that year. The line was extended in 1857 to connect with the Ulverstone and Lancaster Railway, and took over the latter line as well as the Coniston, and the Whitehaven and Furness Junction railways.
Original capital £75,000 and loans of £25,000. Capital in 1853 was £290,000 and loans of £91,933. New capital of £300,000 and loans £100,000 raised in 1881, and again in 1883 of £200,000 and £66,600 respectively.
