
Liverpool and Manchester Railway Company
Incorporated on 5th May 1826.
A line designed to shorten transportation times between the cities. It was opened in 1830, and the journey by steam locomotive took 2 hours 54 minutes rather than the 36 hours it had taken by canal. The line became successful for passenger traffic as a result. It was absorbed by the Grand Junction Railway in 1845 and later formed part of the London and North Western Railway.
Original capital £510,000 in shares and £127,500 in loans. Increased to over £1,800,000 in total. Share number #2476 is in the Science Museum.
