
London and South Western Railway Company
Incorporated on 4th June 1839
A standard gauge line originally 106 miles in length, between London (Vauxhall) and Southampton, with branches into other towns in the South West. The line was originally incorporated as the London and Southampton Railway, but was re-named in 1839 and the company extended their lines into Devon and Cornwall in competition with the Great Western. The company also built Waterloo Station in London, and was a main contributor to the Southern Railway network from grouping.
Original Capital of £4,853,000 divided into; 46,200 Whole Shares; 6,000 £40 Eighths Shares; 46,500 £50 New Shares (for Met. Extension), and 6,000 £40 New Shares (for Guildford Junction). Loans of £1,666,666.
