A line running 14 miles and connecting with the Manchester and Bolton Railway, also replacing a branch of the intended Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal and Railway. It formed part of the East Lancashire Railway from 1845, and thus passed to the Lancashire and Yorkshire company.
