Mersey Pneumatic Railway Company
Incorporated on 28th June 1866
A proposed 1½ mile line via tunnel under the River Mersey, connecting Liverpool and Birkenhead. The name was changed to the Mersey Railway in 1868, and pneumatic propulsion abandoned. The line was connected with the London and North Western, and the Great Western Railways joint lines as well as the Liverpool and Birkenhead railways, and was electrified in 1903.
Original capital £350,000 in shares of £20 each, loans of £116,600. Extended a number of times, total capital in 1890 £2,505,707 in stock, shares and loans.
