Metropolitan District Railway Company
Incorporated on 29th July 1864.
An 8 mile line from Kensington to Tower Hill, which completed the ‘Inner Circle’ and formed the original Underground Railway of London with the Metropolitan Railway. Later called the ‘District Railway’, the line was extended to join the London and North Western and Great Western networks amongst other railways serving the capital, and used electric traction from 1905 along with the Metropolitan Railway.
Capital £3,600,000 in shares of £20 each, loans of £1,200,000. The ‘city lines and extensions’ additional capital in 1879 was £2,500,000 and 800,000, this followed by numerous others. Total capital in 1890 £5,794,444 in stock and shares, £2,062,575 in loans.
