
Midland Railway Company
Incorporated on 10th May 1844
An amalgamation of the North Midland, the Midland Counties, and the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railways. A standard gauge network with a combined length of 322 miles. The company purchased and absorbed numerous other lines, and extended by a further 128 miles from 1847 onwards. Eventually reached points in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, and was the only line serving London with its HQ outside the capital.
