North Eastern Railway Company
Incorporated on 31st July 1854.
An amalgamation of the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway with the York and North Midland, the Leeds Northern and the Malton and Driffield Railways. The company acquired others including the Newcastle and Carlisle, and the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the lines eventually covered over 1500 miles.
Capital at amalgamation included £9,058,075 Berwick stock; £440,570 Hartlepool stock; £50,000 Thirsk and Malton stock; £4,800,000 York stock; £1,940,945 Leeds stock; £160,000 Malton and Driffield stock, and £155,015 in North Eastern preferential 4% stock.
