
Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway Company
Incorporated on 5th May 1837. A 43 mile line which effectively replaced the abandoned Sheffield and Manchester scheme. This line opened in 1845 and amalgamated with others in 1849, together re-incorporated as the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. After reaching London the company was re-named the Great Central Railway in 1897.
Capital £1,871,000 divided into 7,000 Whole Shares of £100 each; 18,000 No.1 Quarter Shares of £25 each; 10,640 No.2 Quarter Shares of £25 each; and 41,200 No.3 Eighth Shares of £12.10s each. Loans of £564,999.
