
Shropshire Union Railway and Canal Company
Incorporated on 3rd August 1846. An amalgamation of the Ellesmere and Chester Canals, the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, and the Shrewsbury and Montgomery Canals. Formed to build three separate railway lines (over existing canal routes) covering 155 miles and providing numerous connections with the London and North Western Railway. Only one line was built between Shrewsbury and Stafford, the company passing to the London and North Western in 1857.
Railway capital £3,300,000 (from all three companies combined authorised capital) issued in shares of £20 each. Loans of £1,099,999. Canal capital (combined) £482,924.
