Surrey Iron Railway Company
Incorporated on 21st May 1801.
The first ‘public’ railway in the country, powered by horses, it ran from the Thames in Wandsworth to Croydon, a distance of around 9 miles transporting minerals and agricultural produce to London. Traffic stopped in 1846 and the lines were removed in 1848. Sections of the route were re-used by the Wimbledon and Croydon Railway.
