Whitehaven, Cleator and Egremont Railway Company
Incorporated on 16th June 1854.
A 4½ mile mainline and branch, to connect Whitehaven and Cockermouth and support the iron industry there. Opened throughout the 1860’s and extended numerous times, the line passed to the London and North Western and the Furness Railways jointly in 1878.
Capital £50,000 in £20 original shares, and new capital of £25,000 in £10 shares. Loans of £24,600. Increased to total of £383,000 in shares and stock, and £118,540 in loans.
