Newry Navigation Company
Incorporated on 12th July 1830. Originally a canal built by the Commissioners of Inland Navigation for Ireland to connect the coalfields in Tyrone to Newry and the Irish Sea. It was publicly funded and opened in 1742 becoming a successful route following the opening of a ship canal in Newry in 1769, making it a busy port. The Newry canal (and the ship canal) passed to the private company ‘The Newry Navigation Co.’ in 1829 following a lack of maintenance and thus reduction in trade. Both were improved and became publicly owned once again in 1901, but had declined due to railway competition. The canal was finally closed in 1936 and abandoned in 1949 and 1956.
Capital not known.
