Edinburgh and Hawick Railway Company
Incorporated on 31st July 1845
The curved line ran 45 miles and was actually built by the North British Railway, who purchased the Edinburgh and Hawick company prior to construction. The Hawick Branch formed part of the ‘Waverley Route’ to Scotland. The line was intended to extend to Carlisle and create competition with the Caledonian Railway, but it was the Border Union Railway which created the important link between the North British Railway and the West Coast Route.
Capital £400,000, possibly raised by North British.
