The bank was set up by Thomas Mooney and was quite successful for a few years when the business was booming and money plentiful. It failed in 1870 when it became clear that Mooney was using funds for his own schemes and making illegal stock purchases to prop up the bank. He absconded in the September causing a run on this and other banks.
